CHINESE DEPUTATION TO THE GOVERNOR.
Yesterday morning at twelve o'clock a depu tation of the Po Leung Kuk (or Society for the Protection of Women and Children, as it has baen not over correctly rendered) was received at Go- vernment House by His Excellency the Gover nor Sir George Bowen. The object of the deputation was the introduction to the Go- Fornor of the
Committee who have takon over the management of the affairs of the Society for the present year. The de- putation was introduced by the Acting Regis trar-General (Mr. J. H. Stowart-Lockhart) and consisted of the following gentlemen
new
Mr.
Li Tak-ch'enng and Mr. Leung On, members of last year's committeo, and Messrs. Li Shing, Tang Yik-man, Tang Yat-fung, and Ip Oi shang, members of the new committee. The Acting Colonial Secretary (Hon. F. Stewart) was also present.
His Excellency the GOVERNOR, on receiving the Committee, stated that it gave him much pleasure to soc around him so many influential members of the Chinese community interest- ing themselves in such an excellent cause as the protection of their fellow-countrymen and women, that he fully appreciated the work done by the Society in the past, and felt sure that it would continue its exertions with the same energy in the future; that the Govern rect would be always willing, whilst not unduly maddling with the affairs of the Society, to give it every assistance with a view to furthering the good object for which it had been established. In conclusion, His Ex- cellency said that he had given instructions to the Acting Registrar-General to convey in writing to Mr. Li Tak-cheung in particular and to the members of the old Committee in general his high sense of the meritorious work performed by them during the past year, which he intended to bring to the notice of the Secretary of State for the Colonies, and that he trusted the same harmony would continue between the new Com. mittee and the Government as had existed in previous years.
The Deputation expressed their gratitude for the cordial reception given them by His Ex- cellency, for the assistance rendered to the So- ciety during the past year by Government, and their fall appreciation of the hearty co-operation of the Registrar-General's Departinent, both
under Mr. Stewart and Mr. Lockhart.
